Aeoording to advices received by the local oflico of the Union Company the Manuka left Sydney for Wellington at Ip.m. yesterday. -The vessel is due here on Tuosday morning, and will land 100 rejooil and 67 steerage passengers, and 523 tons of cargo hefoi-o proceeding on to Lyttelton on Wednesday. IMPROVING PATEA HARBOUR. At tho last mee/ting of the Patea, Harbour Board, the pilot reported that tho channel over tho bar was straight, but very shallow, being only about 9ft. 6in. at low water spring tides, and only about 60ft. wide. He had never seen the entrance so bad since he had been at the station. Ho could not say what water there would be at next tides, but unless it improved boats would not be able to work at low tides. There were 26 arrivals and 27 departure during the month, and there was a lot of bumping and dragging both coming in and going out. In connection with the £86,000 loan recently secured by the Patee. Harbour Board, the Marine Department has approved of the plans prepared by the board's engineer (Mr. B. S. Thompson, A.M.1.0.E.) for the improvement of the port of Patea. Tenders are now being invited for the extensions of the existing breakwater, in concrete, on the "pierrc perdue" system. The completion of these works is being eagerly looked forward to by the shipping companies trading to the port

and the residents of South Taranaki, as it is quite expected that the trade of the port will bo at once increased by at least 50 per cent. The contract time to complete the works is four and a half years. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Mr. J. D. Paul, second officer ol the Kamo, has come ashore at Wellington on sick leave. Captain Nalder, of the Storm, is. to. proceed to England in a few weekß' time to go on active 'service. Wellington Heads has reported that the Stratherly, 4326 tons, bound from Newcastle to Honolulu, passed east on Thursday morning. It is anticipated that the Government steamer Hinemoa will leave on her periodical visit to southern lighthouses on Tuesday. En route from Timc-ra to Napier and Gisborne tho Union steamer Kowhal will make a call at Wellington on Tuesday to pick up any oargo offering. Tho Homo liner Delphic is due at Auckland to-morrow from Whangarei. She will fill up there and sail for London on Wednesday, Fehruary tO. Wireless advice has been rooeived by the local offloe of the F. and S. Line stating that the captain of tho Wostmoath expected his vessel to arrive at Auckland from Liverpool this evening. She should arrive at Wellington on February 13. On arrival at Lyttelton on Wednesday Captain Mawson, master of the Union Company's Korori,- reported sighting off Cape Palliser, at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, a four-masted American schooner. The vessel was bound south, and in all probability is the E. B. Jackson, which left GTay's Harbour on December 19 last with timber for Lyttelton. An expected arrival at Dunedin from Melbourne early next week is the Scales chartered 6teamer. Slcipton Castle. Timaru, Lyttelton, and Wellington will also bo included in tho vessel's itinerary. Laden with case-oil for Singapore, the British Imperial Oil Company's Physawill arrive at Wellington, via way ports, this morning. The Siaw-Savill chartered steamer Trar falgar is expected-to arrive at Port Chalmers from Australia to-day to commence loading for Home.
