The fortnightly 6ato of wool, skins, hides, tallow, and sundries was held in Wellington 'yesterday by the various brokers, whoso reports are appended:— Messrs. Dolgety and Company. Limited, report:—We submitted a largo oatalogae to a full bench of buyers, and rises in prices were the order of the day. Present . prices are gradually getting nearer the famino margin, and under existing conditions there djipears to be the possibility of further rises in the market as it is safe to assume that the buyers' orders will not be filled with the quantities coming forward. We : quote a rise of from 3d. to }d. for good crossbred and halfbred sheep6kins, and even more for dead and damaged lamb skins. Hides 6old at "bumper" prices, with a rise of from 3d. to id. for all weights of sound ox and cow. Calfskins were on a par with last sale rates. Tallow is firmer, and we got 255. per cwt. for some, good shipping lines. Messrs. Levin and Company, Limited, report:—We offered a quantity of odd bales and bags of wool, which sold at' same rates as sale of January 26. There was a very strong demand for sheepskins at advancing prioes. Best quality a 3d. to a id. tip, and . lower grades a penny to twopence advance. Pelts were stronger, ljd. higher. Hides were ' very strong—a. halfpenny advance all round. Calfskins were easier—a halfpenny down. Messrs. Murray, Roberts, and Co., Ltd., report:—Wo submitted a catalogue of about 100 bales and fadges of wool. 4000 sheepskins, 370 hides and a few: odd lots of tallow. Competition' was extremely keen for all classes of produce, and prices showed an advance on the'rates ruling at last sale of 3d. to id. per lb. for sheep-, skins and 3d. per lb. 1 for- hides. Tallow also showed an-advance of Is. to Is. 6d. per cwt. Messrs. Abraham and Williams, Ltd reportj-We offered a large catalogue, of odd lots of wool, 4000 sheepskins, 500 large hides, .and 350 calfskins, .besides numerous lots of tallow, etc. Competition was extremely keen, and everything offered, showed a rise, as compared with last sale. We make the advance as follows:—Sheepskins, 3d. to id. per lb.; and ox hides, Jd. to 3d. per lb.; cows, 3-Bd. per lb. In our catalogue we offered eomo special lines of oi and cow hides, comprising some 200 hides. These w.ere in extra specie^,condition, and made some record prices, as follows:-112 ox at. 10Jd. lo 103 d. per lb., and 78 cowe at 101 d. per lb. Harvesting operations are fully engaging the attention of farmers. A number of sales have, however, been made. The bulk of business has been done at 6e. 3d. and 6s. 4d. at country stations, end a few sales have taken place at 6s. 6d., but the condition m these ca6e.s Irofi been immediate delivery from handy stations. Oats are sellinß freely at 3s. Id. to 3s. 3d., thouffh offerings are not large. Malting barley commands a ready sale up to ss. 64. for prime quality. Oatehcflf chaff is very scarce, as the new crop is not yet fit for shipment. Holders are firm, and neither new nor old can be obtained under £4 15a. at country stations. Ryccrajs is only coming forward in limited quantities and holders are oskina rather more than buyers will jriTe. MONET. MARKET. The Bank of England discount rate was on January 2, 1914, reduced from 5 to 45 per cent., on January 22 it was reduced to 4 per cent., and on January 28 to 3 per cent On July 30 the rate was raised to 4 per cent., on July 31 it-was raised to 8 per cent., and on August. 1. it was farther advanced to 10 per cent. On August 6 the rate was reduced to {.per cent:, oh August further reduced to 5 per oent., at which rate it now stands. The Bank of Prance rate is 7 per cent., as against 4 per oent. list year. ' OPEN MARKET BATES. The .open market discount rate for three months' _ bills is 1 3-8 per' cent., ee compared with 1 15-16 per cent, last week, and 1 15-16 per oent. last year. Interest in 'the Pahiatua Show, to be held .on Inday next, is said to be exceptictally keen. The entries, from a namencal point of view, are easily a record J?he jumping events have attracted a rel markably large entry, and qnito a num. ber of horses new to Pahiatua will make their appearance. A now event this year is the motor-car competition, for which substantial prize money is offered. The conditions attaching to this compel tition are that the competitors drive round the ring and ride down pegs placed at irregular intervals, the drivor who succeeds in knocking down the most pegs in tho quickest time to be adjudged the winner. Judging by the entries being received, this event promises to be one of the most popular attractions of the day. The total number of entries received for tho show and Tam fair cxceed 1000.
