JOTTINGS FROM PROVINCIAL CENTRES. (From Our Special Correspondents.) WANCANUI. The vital statistics for Wanganui for January show a considerable falling away from those of the same month last year, which latter figures are shown in parentheses:—Births, 49 (67); deaths 16 (18); marriages. 8 (22). The Customs duties collected at tho port of Wanganui during January totallea £6273 3s. 3d., compared with £6625 12s. 3d. for the same month last year. The beer duty levied was £157 os., compared with £172 14s. for th& previous January. ( That more roads are needed in the country between Wanagnui and Raetihi is evidenced by two statements made at a meeting of the council of the Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday night. In a letter to the Chamber, a Parapara settler said there was a 780-acre Crown lands section lying idle for want of an outlet. A large settler in the same district, owning over 1000 acres of land,' has m> outlet to a road, yet he pays a considerable sum in rates yearly. In addition to the war funds being raised in Wanganui, another has just been started for the benefit of distressed Servians. Tho Wanganui, tramway takings, for January were a record, amounting to £2039 6s. lid., or £85 os. sd'. more than for the same month of 1914. At .the annual meeting of the Wanganui Boxing Association, Mr. L. Cohen was re-elected president, Messrs. W. Duncan, G. Marshall, and Doctors Wall, Christie, and Earle vice-presidents. Other officers are:—Secretary, Mr. W. S. Corby; treasurer, Mr. W. Bakewell; committee, Messrs. C. E. Mackay, L. Atkinson, D. Kennedy, F. D. Gaffaney,. T. Souter, M. Hogan, junr. It was stated that the past year had been an excellent one, both from a sporting and 'financial point of view, a. deficiency of £60 with which the year started being turned into a credit of £29 16s. sd: It was; resolved to endeavour to arrange for the holding of an amateur tournament in May next.
