GAUNTLET WRIST AND HAND IN ONE. The "Queen" gives a good pattern for a crochet mitten, quite possible and quickly worked: — Ninety chain,. turn 2 chains, miss 1, then 36 short treble, then 12 double crochet, then 42 treble, turn 3 loose chain, miss 1, or repeat treble on treble, double crochet on double crochet, and short treble, on short treble 34 runs. All stitches to be worked into the back to make it ribbed. Join hand at top 16 stitches and break off.

Thumb. —22 chain turn: Ist row, 2 tight chain, miss 1, 22 double crochet, counting the first 2 chain as 1 turn.— 2nd row: No chain, 22 d.c, turn.—3rd row: 2 chain, miss 1, 20 d.c, missing last two stitches, turn.—4th row. Miss 2, 18, d.c, turn. — sth row: 2 chain, miss 1, 17 d.c, turn.—6th row.: Miss 1, 16 d.c—7th row: 2 chain, miss 1,"14 d.c—Bth row: Miss 1, 13 d. crochet—9th row: 2 chain, miss 1, 12 d.c.—loth row: 2 chain, miss 1, 11 d.c.—llth row: 2 chain, miss 1, 11 d.c, and 3 chain at end to increase turn, miss 1 chain, and d.c. tho row, and repeat second half of thumb; leave 3} yards of wool to join thumb, wrist, and gauntlet after thumb is inserted.

Thumb is inserted about 3 stitches from wrist, and double crochet all round very neatly, then join thumb, wrist, and gauntlet right down. If thick wool is used, 30 or 32 rows will be enough for the mitten. The thumb is worked about tho same in all wools. Four ounces of good wool required, to bo workod very tightly and evenly with a very small straight hook. In turning rows at top of hand keep the 2 chain tight; in turning rows at gauntlet end keep tho 3 chain loose. The short treble is: Wool over hook as for ordinary treble; insert the hook in the chain, draw wool through, wool over hook, and draw through all the loops on tho hook at once.
