A "SEWERMAN.S FIGHT"

A young lieutenant who distinguished himself in defending his trench against on incursion of Germans gave to a Central News man a vivid impression of what he called a "sewerman's fight" in a drain. Armed with a rifle and bayonet, ho, it appeared, though he did not say so, led tho little rush down, the trench which evicted tho enemy.

"It was squish;- work," ho said. "There was mud and water half-way to one's knees, and in this I played a slippery game of hide-and-seek, thrust and parry, with a whopping great German who led tho other side. It only lasted a few seconds, I suppose, but it onded funnily. All of a sudden another German appeared on tho parapet and tried to leap right over. He couldn't do it, and fell right' on to my, fellow, and they both fell lighting, kicking, and scratching in the mud. It was a scream. Thon a corporal of ours emptied his magazine down tho trench over my 6houldor, and when he finished I continued the good work. So in tho end we scored hcavilj."

But this is a very unconventional war. Of what avail, for instance, are his books to a crinan officer who, having conduoted a vory dashing attack the verge of a wood apparently strongly held, discovers on arrival that, whilo his men are still dropping from a heavy fire, tho enemy are apparently not there? So he looked heavenward, perhaps for inspiration, and then ho saw whore his enemy had hidden. There they wero, high up'in tho branches, taking very deliberate aim at the nonplussed Germans, who, before they could gather themselves together to copo with this fire, wore violently assaulted by a largo body of ■ reserves who had remained some.'distance, inside tho wood and now drove them back with much jrnsto*
