SUBURBAN TRAMS.

Sir, —The following facts regarding our tramway alleged management strikes me as one of the most silly imaginable. On Saturday evenings, from 5 p.m., when big crowds are returning from Lyall Bay and Seatoun on the ordinary cars, a relief car is supposed to run from Hataitai to Courteiuy Place to carry into town the big crowds from that suburb who are going in shopping, etc. What do we find? The relief car runs past the crowd away n couple" of hundred yards down the line, waits there until the Bay or Seatoun car comes along, packed to suffocation, and when the fifty or sixty waiting passengers have rammed themselves into the sardine-packed mass of this car, and there is no ono left for the moment waiting for the next tram, the relief car whips round its trolly-pole and runs gaily away to Courtenay Place—empty —then it returns to Hataitai and repeats the performance. Now, one would think the relief car would, on reaching Hataitai, turn round, immediately pick up tho crowd there, and run in in front of the crowded car, or cars. But no : nothing sensible like that eventuates. The idea carried out seems to be t« cause as much annoyance and inconvenience as possible. Publicity is the only remedy. Thanking you, I am, etc., A. JOYNT. Pirie Street, January 29, 1915.
