TRENTHAM CAMP.

TO-DAY'S SPORTS MEETING. The soldiers in camp at Trentham will take part in a sports gathering this afternoon on the racecourse, and an exicting afternoon is anticipated. The programme of • events is an attractive one, including bayonet lighting exhibitions, drill and rifle exercise competitions,. an inter-unit relay race, interunit tug-of-war competition, cross-coun-try run, tent-pitching competition, 100 yards, 400 yards, half-mile, and ono mile camp championships, high jump, putting the weight competition, and various humorous events. The various competitions have attracted numerous entries, in one case'as many as 210, the preliminary heats will be got off during the morning," and in the afternoon, commencing from 2 o'clock, only semi-finals and finals will bo decided. In the inter-unit events specially keen rivalry is being displayed. The prize-money offered is substantial, totalling over £300, which is being provided from the camp's own funds. The Sports Committee and men at Trentham' extend the most cordial invitation to the public to attend to-day's ■sports gathering. All visitors will be treated by the soldiers as their' guests and will be provided with afternoon tea. Trains will leave Wellington at 1.12, 1.20, and 1.40, and will leave Trentham for Wellington at 4.45, 5.30, and 6.10. AMATEUR OR PROFESSIONAL? The secretary of . the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association (Mr. J. C. Cusack) in. an advertisement published in another part' of this issue, draws attention to the fact that amateurs who take part in events for which cash prizes are offered will lose their amateur status, and bo debarred from competing in amateur events in the future, either in New Zealand or abroad. -
