—»— SENTENCED TO A MONTH IN GAOl' When the - steamer Somerset was at Lyttelton, recently, a seaman named , Join Wickstone endeavoured to ab- ' scond from the vessel- He arrested, however, sentenced by a Magistrate -to one month's. imprisonment on the understanding that if the Somerset, sailed- before the expiration of his sentence he .was. to be put . on' hoard. Owing to this Wickstone was brought to Wellington' on Friday last and placed on board the Somerset, which was to sail the following daj\ No sooner was Wickstone' placed on the vessel, however,, than he turned, tail and bolted .down, the . gangway and off the wharf. The ship's officers gave.' chase, but Wickstone escaped • and the Somerset sailed\.the following, day without 'Mm. The master of the vessel' had to get a substitute. On Monday, however, the missing seaman was imprudent enough to oome under the notice of the police, and was arrested.' Wickstone appeared before Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., yesterday and pleaded that he had only • gono ashore for a drink. .v . ; 1 ,■ '_' "You must have been'' very thirsty to run so hard," dryly observed Mr. Cooper.
