On; Wednesday, Colonel Robin will inspect' tho 300 officers and N.C.O.'s undergo-! ing instruction on the Wanganui Race-' course, and will return to Wellington: on Thursday morning. , Mr. P. Verschaffelt, who has been' acting secretary to the Public Service, Commissioner' since the transfer of Mr.| A. J. H. Benge to tho Education Department, has been permanently appointed to the position. Commissioner Hoddor, of the Salvation Army, and Mrs. Hodder addressed 1 crowded meetings at Auckland yesterday. They aro duo at Rotorua to-mor-row. The chief secretary and Mrs. Powley are accompanying tho commissioner.Mr. Hugh Buckler, the well-known English actor, has been recalled to England, to servo with his regiment, of which he is a reserve officer. Mrs. Buckler (Miss Violet Paget) is now managing tho Little Theatre, Sydney, herself. Mr. Meredith Atkinson, Australasian organiser for the Workers 1 Educational Association, will .yrive in Wellington from Sydney to-morrow. The same evening he will lecture on "He History of Trades Unionism'.' at the Town Hall; on Wednesday afternoon he will address labour officials and friends in tho Town Hall. Mr. D. Stewart, of the Trades Hall, Sydney, who is accompanying Mr. Atkinson, will speak at' tho Trades Hall on Wednesday evening and at Petone on Thursday evening. Mr. Walter Dinnio, president of the Native Land Court, lokerau district, has retired from the sen ice on superannuation. Mr. and Mrs. John Fuller, senr., and Miss Fuller, of Auckland, are visitors to Wellington. Mr. F. G. Robertshaw, postmaster at Tauranga, has retired from the service on superannuation. Advice has been received by thepolice of the sudden death at Otaki of' Mrs. Rawena Griffiths, aged 70 years.
Mr. and Mrs. Victor Casey, of Auckland, are visitors to Wellington. Mr.. Casey is a son of Mr. Maurice Casey, who has been a prominent figure oil northern local bodies, and is at present president of the Dominion Bowling As-' sociation. Mr. Victor Casey is himself an enthusiastic bowler, and in the recent Dominion tournament at land was a member of Mr. Maxwell* Walker's rink. '
Major Colvin, of Territorial Head-/ quarters of the Salvation Army, Cour-' ienay Place, loft town on Saturday- for a tour in the Wellington province on special business. Ho will address meetings, among other places, at Napier, iGisborne, Palmerstpn North, Feilding, Hastings, Mastorton, and Carterton. The many friends of the popular cu&-"'' todian of the Town Hall, Mr. T. W. Leslie, will regret to hear of tho death/ of his wife, which occurred at Mr. George Hooper's residence,. Taita, on Saturday. Mrs. Leslie was taken ill about three months i;o, and in the hope that the sea air might make her well and strong again she was removed tot Lyail Bay. Last Wednesday, how-; ever, she' took a turn for the worse,, and was removed to Taita, where she! passed away peacefully on Saturday. - The late Mrs. Leslie was the daughter' of Mr. James Goer, storeman at the Wellington Corporation Yards. Sho leaves a family of six girls and one bpy-' llie funeral will leave the Town Hall at 10 a.m. to-morrow for St. Peters' Church, and thence to Karori Cemetery. Mr." E. K. Mulgan, chief inspector of tho Auckland Education Board, will leavo on a trip to England about the end of March next. While in the Ola Country he will make an appointment on behalf of the board of an instructor for tho proposed class of backward children, provided for by the new partmental regulations. Mr. Mulgan will return, at the end of tho year.
