LIGHT-WEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP. <By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) j Napier, January 21. The. Hawke's Bay Boxing Association held a boxing tournament to-night at the Princess Theatre, Hastings, when Peter' Cook,' of Christchurch, lightweight champion,: met AV. Shutt, of Tirnaru, for a purse of £40 and -the title.... The contest was'vigorously and cleanly fought, and went the full 16 round's, Cook being adjudged the victor ori points. Shutt was very aggressive throughout, but Cook was the more finished boxer, and met hiß opponent's leads by clever smothering and side-stepping. He also got in many good body blows, and had all. the- test of the in-fighting. Shutt's forceful exhibition was very popular with the crowd, many of whom thought he had . won by reason of his leading. In the first round Cook had his right eye damaged, and Shutt, taking advantage of the faot, appeared almost a certain winner," particularly as an unintentional low blow to the body put Cook in great pain as the gong sounded the close, of the second round. However, the champion used fine generalship till he had again recovered. •Throe amateur bouts results as follow:—H. Gunn (Timnru), 7st. 101b., beat v. Kerr (Christchurch), Bst.4lb. F. England (Napier, KM. 'lib., beat C. Whitwell (Takapaii), 9st. 101b. F. Haynos (Nnpior), 9st., beat Avery (Hastings), Bst. 41b. . ! Mr. H. A. Keesing was reforoo, Tho association had tho arrangements well in hand, and the ring furnishings included an electrio fan, which was greatly apprccintod by tho competitors. Prior to tho first bout, tho president (Mr. Ij. .1). Frasor) stated that the proocods wero to bo dovotod to tho Belgian Relief Fund.
