GRASS, LOG & BUSH FIRES

IN THE 'AKITIO COUNTY.

The Pongaroa district has again been the scene of disastrous bush, log, and grass firee. During.the dry spell last spring a. considerable amount of damage was done by fires. Since then very little rain has fallen over the greater portion. of the Akitio County. Consequently tho grass and logs were in a dry condition, and the high winds experienced at the beginning of this week caused tho fires to spread very rapidly. A very large quantity of sawn timber, fencing material, and logs suitable for milling purposes have been destroyed,' and this will naturally cause a shortage of timber in the Akitio County. .. . Messrs. Gardner and Yeoman s sawmill at Pukehinau, which was demolished by the flames, was the largest of ite'kmd within a sixty-mile radius, and tho bulk-of the timber used in tho Pcngaroa' district was obtained from this source. In a newly-settled district, however, the log fire danger has always to be contended with, as early residents in the Pahiatua district will remember, in many cases to their disadvantage. '
