WELLINGTON DIAMOND JUBILEE
« It is just 50 years ago since the great gold rush took place on the West Coast, which has been known ever since as the Golden West. To commemorate the diamond jubilee of Wellington, the West Coasters' Association will give an exhibition of how gold was first obtained by the minors and their old-fashioned cradles that were used so'much in the back gullies before the dams and water-races were mado to convoy the water for the hydraulic sluicing. Tho dirt, will be washed in the presence of the public, and the green baizo taken from the cradle after the washdirt has been passed through. Here will be seen the gold on the cloth. This will be emptied in the dish, the black 6and washed off, and the pure ' gold oxhibitcd to the general public. An exhibition of the quicksilver and tho copperplate methods will also be given afterwards, showing the improved systems now in existonco.
