WATER FOR EASTBOURNE
e THE GOLLAN'S VALLEY SCHEME. For some time now the Eastbourne Borough Council has had under consideration ■ the question of how to provide a water supply for the borough. At the meeting of the council last night the following ropdrt qf the Wator Supply Committee was presented: "The coinmittce is of opinion (1) that the local streams, including that of Dny's Bay, would not provide an adequate water supply for the borough; (2) that the cost of procuring water from the Wellington City Council, i.e., not less than £800 per mile for mains, and 9d. per 1000 gallons for water, puts such a solution out of tho question. "The committeo recommends to the council tho adoption of the original proposal to obtain water from tho Goltan's Valley Stream, and in connection therewith suggests (1) that Gollan's Valley and the streams therein be thoroughly examined by the council; (2) that new estimates be obtained as to the cost of the proposed waterworks (reticulation of borough included); (3) that estimates lie obtained including, the cost of increasing the size of tho Sroposed tunnel to enable the same to e used for foot traffic. _ • ' "The committee has, after_ inquiry, como to the conclusion that it is not necessary for tho present to deal with the matters of storm-watqr, drainage, and sewerage. "Your committeo desires to point out that even if a proposal for a water supply is agreed to by the ratepayers of the borough, such water scheme could not bo brought into existence for fully 18 months after the sanctioning of the proposal by the ratepayers."'
