DEMAND FOR SLAUGHTERMEN
LABOUR FOR AUSTRALIA. By Teleerapl—Pr«B3 Association—Cc i >yris'ht (Ilec. January 15, 9.40 p.m.) Sydney,: January 15. Twenty slaughtermen are coining over to New Zealand by the Manuka in respouse to a request from the Dominion Slaughtermen's Union, which has secured them positions. Mr. M. J. Reardon, secretary of the Slaughtermen's Union, to whom the abovo message was referred last evening, says that tho reason for their being brought over from Australia is not exactly that there is a shortage of men here. The southern sheds have commenced work earlier than usual, and most of the North Island sheds have greatly increased their killing capacity 'since 1913. Formerly there were eighty hooks at the . Gear Company's works; now there are about 120.. At Masterton they have increased their capacity by making room for an .additional twenty men. There is increased room at Longbnrii. At Castlecliff, where twenty-five men were employed, there is now room for about forty. A new shed was opened in Hawke's Bay last week, with accommodation for twenty-six or twentyeight men.
