' 16 In "The Marine Engineer and Naval Architect," published in London, is the s " report of a presentation to Sir James * Mills, K.C.M.G., at. the Institute, of Marino Engineers. The presentation, * e which consisted of a handsome service ' on,silver plate, was mad© by Mr. James J® Adamson, the hon. secretary of the ini stitute, and was made on behalf of the t engineers of the Union Steam Ship Company of Now Zealand- It boro the following inscription: "To Sir James .1 Mills, K.C.M.G., and Lady Mills, from the engineers of the Union Steam Ship ° Company, upon Sir James's retirement from the managing directorship of the ' company." In acknowledging the hearty good wishes expressed towards him by Mr, ic Adamson, Sir James Mills said he was ~ glad to have the opportunity •of reciprocating tho jjood feelings expressod between the engineers of tho company and himself. It was, he added, fitting that he should also take the oppnrtunii ity of recognising the courtesies extended to him by the Wellington district, of the Australasian Institute of Marino ° Engineers as a whole. "There was a time when our fleet was small, and then • 'I enjoyed the personal acquaintance of our leading engineers. But with the y. growth of the fleet and its widespread operations oyer many seas it has not been possible to know more than a few of something like 350 engineers in oiv employ, but their loyalty to the company is evidenced by the work dono by " the fleet and the condition in which tho company's ships are kept in their department."
