OUR EXPORT TRADE
SHIPPING SPACE-A CONTRAST. . "All freezing companies', works are filled to overflowing with frozen meat, and big. prices are being offered for shipping space." The foregoing is an extract from a letter to the Prime Minister from the New Zealand Trade Commissioner in the Commonwealth, and the letter refers to the state of things in Australia. It would appear that the producing industries m Australia are not likely to be so well served in the matter of overseas shipping as are the New Zealand industries. - "At least so far as the near future is concerned there is no need for anxiety iu New Zealand," said the Prime Minister yesterday. "We have arranged for an ample supply of ships for -She next two months, at the end of which time the season should be slackening off n little. Eleven insulated steamers will bo available in February, and eight have already been arranged for March loading, hut no doubt there will be others available in March. In the meantime we are certain of eight. "It is probably true that the drought in certain districts is causing more anxiety than any possible shortage of ships. The drought was not broken by recent raina, which wero not generally any means. In the East Coast districts they have had rains which have done good, but they need more rain. Ii parts of the Auckland district they have had heavy rains, and in other* 1 none at all."
