BOXING

' -4— WELCOME TO "BILLY" ELLIOTT. A big crowd of boxing friends and well-wisliers assembled; at "Billy" Elliott's rooms in Manners Street last night to extend a welcome to the exAustralian feather-weight boxing champion, who reoently returned to the l)o----muuon for the purpose of going into business as an instructor in tho noble art. Among those present were the chairman of the Wellington Boxing Association (Mr. 11. W. Sl'Villy) <and several members of the committee. Mr M'Villy addressed the gathering, remarking that Elliott needed no introduction as ho had distinguished himself in several important contests both here and on _the other side, and had a good record "in the ring and out of it. Elliott had decided to open a pastimer, club here, and if he ran it oil clean lines there was no reason why' it should not succeed. Other clubs of the kind had been started here, however, and had failed because of the managements He hoped that Elliott would profit by their experience, and avoid their'fate. Mr. M'Villy also expressed the hope thut all who had the interests of the sport at heart would assist Elliott to keep the club on right lineSj and lend the promoter as much support as possible. Mr. G, Burnett, who replied on "behalf of Elliott, said that the latter had always endeavoured to play the game; and would continue' to do so. It was his intention to run the concern as a club at a small subscription, and as a school of boxing. It was hoped there would be a good response from those connected with the sport. He wished to express his thanks; for the kind word 3 uttered by Mr. M'Villy and for the attendance of members of the Boxing Association Committeej and so many friends. Laier in the evening Elliott showed all his old-time skill in a three-round bout with the local feather-weight, J. Kutner. Other bouts during the evening were "Tim" Tra/:y v. "Mick" Stewart; "Tim" Tracy -v. Minifie; Ellis v. Ellis;' and another ' between two small boys. E. Hughes and Martin gave an exhibition of wrestling. Mr. T. Sampson acted as referee.
