HUTT AND PETONE NEWS.

At Monday's meeting of the Petone Oouncil 'the engineer's report- stated that the trench opened by the.-Post and Telegraph Department had been repaired, and an account for £79 2s. Id. rendered to the Department. Arrangements were being made to have the council's growing crop of oats (which was in full ear) reaped at an early date, and although not bo heavy as last year the fodder should b) very valuable as horse feed, in the event of a possible shortage, of oats in the Dominion. The borough inspeotor reported that J44 inspection had been made since last report, 13 notices to effect sanitary repairs and renewals had been served, six to replace leaking taps, two to clear noxious weeds, and 15 letters sent to residents for various reasons. Nine sanitary plumbing jobs were passed as satisfactory; also two new drains. With a view to catering for the recreation of Petone children the Borough Oouncil instructed its engineer (Mr. A. Cowie) to inspect (with power to purchase) six swing-boats offered for sale by Mr. A. E. Right. 'On Tuesday morning, after a thorough inspection, the engineer expressed himself as highly pleased with the swings, and decided to secure them on the council's bciialf. .. A public meeting Tvas hold at Lowor Hutt on Tuesday, the Mayor (Mr. H. Baldwin) presiding, for the purpose of forming a branch of the National Reserve. Mr. Bell, of Normandale, ex-, plained tho objects of, the movement, and at tho conclusion of the meeting it was dccided that a local . branch should bo formed. On Tuesday morning a fire broke out in promises owned by Mr. W. P. Pringle, of Silvorstream, and occupied by Mr. J. C'ulford 8011, tailor, on tho Main Road, Lower Hutt. The brigade was soon on the spot and managed to save tho stock and building from destruction,. but much of tho former was damaged by water, 'J'ho, stock was insured with the Queensland Insurance Office for £350, but the insuranco on tho building is unknown.
