MAGISTRATE'S COURT
CHARGES OF BREAKING AND ENTERING STANBY FURTHER REMANDED, Oscar Stanby, who was discovered prowling about the roof of the Direct Emporium, jewellers' shop, in Willis Street, last week, and who was charged at the Magistrate's Court the following day with attempting to break and enter these premises, again appeared before . Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., yesterday, and had four more similar charges preferred against him.- A further remand Was. asked to next Wednesday, on the understanding ■ iliat accused may be brought before the Court sooner. Some of the witnesses concerned in the case are on vessel's in port, and their evidence may have to be taken before their boats sail. The charges now against the accused, who has several aliases, are as follow i— (1) On January 7, attempt to break and enter by night the Direct Emporium jewellers' shop in Willis Street. (2) On January 5, breaking and entering the shop of H. D. Edwards by night, and stealing a kit bag,, valued at 255., the property of W. Usher. (3) On the same date, ( a similar offence in respect to-10 pairs of boots and a purse,' valued at £10 Is,, the property of H. D. Edwards. (4) On January 7, breaking and entering by night the shop of Moscb,Edgar aid Co., and stealing 11 knives, valued at. lis., the property of Moses, Edgar and Co. (5) On January 7, attempting to break and enter by night the shop of Robert Dunlop Smith, with intent to commit a crime. GIVEN ANOTHER CHANGE. Wm. Gamer appeared on remand charged with being idle and disorderly, in that he consorted with reputed thieves. Mr. H. F. O'Leary appeared for accused, and pleaded for'leniency as accused, he said, was not really a loafer and had been working constantly of late. Evidence was called to substantiate this.' i '■ Inspector Hendrey .said that accused was arrested with a gang of men and had no doubt been led astray by the two leaders of this gang. "Such gangs 'as this one," said the Inspector, "are a danger to the community, and sooner or later its members are brought beforo the Court on charges, of assault and robbery. 1 ' Hie Inspector ( flaid /he had no objection to accused being given another change, as he had been offered further work.- • ' "Now, let this/sink Into your mind," said the Magistrate to accused, "if you mix again with these thieves I shall drop on you Very heavily." Accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called Upon. A SERIOUS CHARGE.' Arthur Hainsworth, a youth of 17 years,-was charged with carnallv knowing a girl under the age of 16'-years. He was defended by Mr. V, R. Meredith, and after the henring of the evidence pleaded liot guilty, being committed to the Supreme Court for trial. Bail was allowed in the sum of £25, in accused's own recognisance, anil ho was ordered to Teport to tho police daily. AN IMPUDENT THIEF. • Wmi' Tierny, a'very old offender fordrunkenness, appeared to answer . his first charge of ..theft, that' of stealing a pair' of boots.--ttilued at 14s. 6d., the property of Robert Hannah"." Accused had taken the pair of boots from a rack outside Hantialrs shop, and had walked - : down-the..Jtreet with ;ihe : boots.- swinging in his hands. A constable'who observed him naturally had his suspicions aroused, and Tierny was Jator irrested. A fine of 205., with cost® 4b., in default seven days' gaol, was itrt posed.
OTHER CASES. Michael Drisooll strenuously pleaded his lfihoeenee of a charge of being idle and disorderly in that he had ineufßcient lawful means of support. The evidence of two constables proved otherwise however. "Tlie man'wants soap and water very badly," was Inspector Hendrey'B comirtont. A sentence of two months' imprisonment was imoosed. - The.'rases against Kathleoti Von Cant, charged with drunkenness ?ml brealiing a Tvindow, were further adjourned, as accused is still an inmate of the Hospital. May Houston was filled £2, or fourteen days, for drunkenness, and sent to gaol for two months on a charge of being idle and disorderly, jti that she had insufficient lawful means of BUpport. Archibald Sloan, who has managed to get arrested, for drunkenneßS three times since Monday last, .was fined 205., or three days' gaol, on yesterday's, his third'offence. James M'Sweeney,. a prohibited person, had been arrested a similar number of times since 'Saturday; and was fined £2, of foufteen days. Similarly charged, Jolrn George was fined 10s., or 48 hours. One first offender was convicted and discharged,-
