MASTER BAKERS AND THE ■ GOVERNMENT. . Referring to the price of flour th annual report of the New Zealan TJnited Master Bakers' Associatio; says:— ' ■ "Owing to the outbreak of the mos deplorable war in the history of th world and other causes, the price o flour has been very high' during th latter portion of the year, and baker in various parts of the Dominion hav been unable to adhere to the tariff a adopted'by the conference." . "It was apparent to the executiv during the earlier stages of the wa that bakers would be placed in a ver; serious position regarding the supplie of flour, especially in view of the en bargo placed on flour imported froi Australia (the embargo placed by th Commonwealth Government against th export of flour). _ "Your executive ' approached th Prime Minister to have the ombarg removed, especially regarding; contract already made, and also the removal o the duty off imported flour, and w are pleased to report that the Prim Minister's efforts were successful ij the first instance, and the Departmen generously acceded to our request i the latter." TIMARU COMPLAINTS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Tlmaru, January 10. Inquiries made on Saturday into th cause of the rise in the price of breai to 9£d. for the 41b. and sd. for th. 21b. loaves olicitated chiefly complaint that the alleged shortage of wheat hai led to the holding and bearing of th market, and' that the proclamation fix ixipr the price of flour had not been en forced though known to be disregard ed. One business man has written a length to the Prime Minister on the inius tice done to Timaru and Oamaru miller by fixing prices. War or no war price must liave gone up owing to the short age here and in Australia. Fowl whea (has been selling at 65., and 7s. had beei refused. The law of supply and de mand ought to have been permitted t< have full play. One miller thought th. price should drop immediately now tli crop was available. •
