'■ 9 METHODIST QUARTERLY MEETINGS: v During last week the quarterly .meetings of the Hutt and Potono Methodist churches- were held. , In connection with the former (the; Rev. W. Beckett presiding), tbe financial statement presented by Mr. Armitage -showed that £140 had been raised during the qiiar- ■ ter, the circuit debt was' reduced by £2 7s. 3d. ;,and now stands at £19 Is. Arrangements were made for _ holding the harvest thanksgiving services on Sunday, March 14j and Monday, March 15. and a committee was set up, .whh Mr. Waroes as convenor, to furtlier the object. A sum of £36 16s. 2d. was raised for foreign missions, and £27 17s. for home missions, being a considerable advance on previous years. ,Mr. Armitage was elected representative. to the annual conference to be held at Christchurch next month, ; and Mr. W. Walton was appointed circuit steward. Mr. B. W. Bird, who filled , the latter office for V«'o years, was heartily thanked for liis services. Mr. Hazelwood Tvas appointed , "Methodist Times" _ agent, and Mr. Armitage senior circuit steward. Sympathy was expressed with tbe relatives of the late ; Mr. Jbhn Clement, and with Mr. and Mrs: Staunard Knight in the sad loss of their two children. At Petone the Rev. J. J. Lewiß presided over, a fair attendance, 1 and' the' financial position of the church was con-, sidered satisfactory; The number of church members and Sunday school scholars was being well maintained. The meeting supported the proposal for the management of the "Methodist Times by the church itself,; and guaranteed the; number of subscribers asked for. Mr- , J. Jacobsdn. was Representative to the conference, the'Rev.'-J'.-J. Lewis was granted a fortnight's holiday, and arrangements were made for the harvest festival-, services, ithe Sunday, school anniversaries in both Nelson and Jackson Streets churches, and also the united Sunday school festival, ; when all the congregations of the .' circuit will be brought together. It was intimated that the new pipe organ will be installed in the Nelson Street-, Church about the month of June. ... '. . HUTT VALLEY BUILDING SOCIETY.. In the, report to be presented at the first annual meeting of the Hutt Valley Building Society, to be held shortly at Petone. The directors consider the results very satisfactory, in view of the fact that a. huge expense has had to be incurred in forming a new socioty, and considering the bad times experienced recently. Seventeen . directors' meetings have been held, and ihoro has been two appropriations of loan by ballot during the year. . • At the annual meeting two directors and 0110 auditor BTB to DB elected, and in.the caseof former . it will be necessary, to. appoint one ■ shareholder in place -of Mr. M'Donald, - who has left the district, whilst Mr. i A. W. Watson .offers himself for re--1 election. The balance-sheet showed the funds of the society to be sound, tho cash account showing a Post Office bank i. balance of £200, a credit at the Bank ■ of New > Zealand of £47 os. 2d., and ; cash in hand £4 Bs. ; . ; His Lordship Bishop Julius, of i Christchurch, conducted the, service at . St. James's Church, Lower Hutt, last [ evening. ) Much sympathy is being expressed at Petone with Mr. and Mrs. G. H. Oates in the loss of their daughter Vera, aged 8 years. The little girl was seized with 1 appendicitis some three weeks ago, and " underwent an . operation, but although 3 this was successfully performed, the i child gradually faded until the end i came peacefully on- Saturday. ino ' funeral will take place this afternoon. 1 _______ '
