FIRE IN AUCKLAND
DAMAGE' BETWEEN £2000 AND ■'■ ' £3000. . (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Auckland, January 8. A fire which caused damage estimated at between £2000 and £3000 occurred at Newmarket this afternoon. The outbreak originated in _ the living room above the chemist shop- of Wilfred Fookes, three rooms being gutted.' The flames ' spread along the wooden rafters, causing damage to the ceilings of,three other rooms in the same block. 1A considerable number of rooms of other shops in the block were damaged by water, the stocks in some cases being also damaged. The premises affect- ' 'ei were Fookes, chemist; W. Lane and Co., tobacconist; C. F..' Douglaa, fish saloon; E!oung Young, fruiterer—all 'damaged by water. The owner of the block is Mr. R. H. Abbott. The shops are insured in the Liverpool and Lon : don and Globe Office; Fookes's stock in the Standard Office, and Beckmann's stock In the Ocean Office, Koung Young was also insured. Douglas wa-s :uninsured. The amounts of the insurances are, unknown.
