NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIP. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Chrlstchurch, January 7. The Chess Congress was advanced a further stage to-day.-The Fifth Round. —0. E. Fox v. Barnes (Queen's Gambit Declined). — This was -an even game to the 14th move, when Barnes, through an oversight, lost the centre pawn, and got into a bad position. With this advantage Fox played splendidly', and won on the 38th move. 'Mara v. Hill (R-uy Lopez).—Mara won the exchange, rook for a knight and pawh, Hill resigning at move 45. Selling v. Severne (Queen's Gambit Declined).—Unfinished. At one stage Severne was a pawn to the good, but he failed to maintain it, and the position is now in Kelling's favour. Ploas'ants v. Grierson (Ruy. Lopez).— Pleasants lost a pawn, but gradually acquired a very strong position, scoring a win on the 39th move. Hicks v. Dodds (King's Bishop's Gambit Accepted).—Dodds won a knight for a couple of pawns, but neglecting to make the most of his opportunities the game was drawn on the 63rd move. Buckett v. Moore (l'etroff Defence). — An oven game throughout. A draw was agreed to at move 36. Tho following unfinished games' were completed:— Moore v. Barnes (Round B)l—Barnes won on the 77th movo. Barnes v. Mara (Round 11). —Barnes won on the 60th movo. Hicks v. Grierson (Round 10).—Hicks won at movo 61. Severne v. Hill (Round 11). —Drawn on the 79th move. ' ,The scores at present are:— Games.
