MIRAMAR AFFAIRS
BOROUGH'S ELECTRIC VENTURES, The Miramar Borough' Council at present is supplying tie trams running within its boundaries with electric current generated at the borough's powerliousßj but owing to tHe fact that tlie generating medium consists of two 150-horse-power Diesel engines (which run on crude oil), ;the cost to the borough lin6 not been reduced as much as was anticipated. Indeed; since the price of oil has gone up the co6t to the borough for tho generation of current is said to exceed the price from which it could W purchased from the city, and in addition the borough has involved itself in the capital cost of works that are havdly capable of dealing with ,eyery. emergency "that presents itself. The borough noiv contemplates talcing over .the' electric lighting aiid heatin"' business' within the confines of tho district, to cope with which work additional plant will hnvQ to be installed. Tho borough now charges an adult nothing less than a twopenny fare on Saturday afternoons, Sundays, and holidays to ride anywhere from tho boundary past the Seatoun and Miramar junction. - The journey between the boundary and tho terminus at Seatoun is easily tho shortest twopenn'ortli on tho whole of tho tramway system of Wellington, and mu3t stand, in the way of popularising Seatoun and ita pre-' cincts. From town to Seatoun on a Sunday or holiday costs lOd. return, whilst'the resident who has a concession ticket performs the journey on h week day for 6d. return, so that it is tho casual visitor who is penalised to make up the doiiciency in the revonue.
