TEACHERS AND DRILL

A COMPLAINT AND A. REPLY. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) burjfldln, January 5. Last week the Hon. J. Allen received the following telegram from ■ Dr. 'L'hacker, M.P. for Christchurch East: —"Teachers in my electorate, older ones indignant, they should be drilled and all of them see no reason, why they should be docked one week's holiday under Garlick's scheme." The reply sent,.by Mr. Allen was:—"My experience "has been that teachers who were adverse to physical training at the start in almost every instance were grateful for the 1 training received when the training ended, and the. older ones especially so. I hope this may be the case in your electorate. Arrangements as to time were made with the Education Board of the district, at the initiation of the schema for the training/of teachers. It may involve 6ome sacrifice oh the-teachers', part, but I have found teachers ready to give up something in order to. place themselves in a bettor position to deal with that side of the child's training which we cannot afford to neglect. I have also found that tho association of teachers at these training camps'has been beneficial through the mutual intercourse and social enjoyments, and that nearly everyone' has'' been sorry when- the training ceased, and in some cases teachers have asked that the camps be made annual." • ■
