GALLANT ATTEMPT AT RESCUE. Wanganui, January 2. An inquest on Gwendoline Christina Wliteford, aged 13 years, who was 'drowned in the river at Kaiwahaike yesterday, when bathing with three companions, disclosed that a gallant attempt was made- by E. W. Merryweather to save diseased's life. Merryweather dived in half-dressed, but collided with a log. , At the second attempt be obtained bold of two of the girls, but the weight of-his clothes and'of the two girls prevented his coming to the surface. ' He pusbed them oft'/ came to the surface, dived again, caught one girl, and managed to bring her to the surface, but sank with her. ,Finally he got' her safe, then made repeated efforts to find deceased. The Coroner commended Merryweather's action, and wi'l. recommend it to the Royal Humane Society for recognition. A verdict of accidentally drowned was returned. ' ' /
.WOMAN SUFFOCATED. Dannevirke, January 2. At an inquest held to-day on a woman named Annie Thornhill, who was found dead yesterday in her bedroom, a verdict was returned that death was due'to suffocation as a result of excessive drinking. FARM LABOURER FOUND DEAD. Auckland, January 3. The body of a farm labourer named William Christopher Costal was found suspended from a rafter in a cowshed at Mangere yesterday.
