BLUE LAKE AND CHAKWANA DEAD HEAT. (By Correspondent.) Carterton, January 2. ■■ The concluding day's races at Tanherinikau took place in good weather and before a large attendance. The totalisator receipts totalled .£14,181, against .£12,837 on the second day -last year, an increase of -£1344. - The totalisator figures for the meeting were =£30,369, or £1065 more than last year's New Year gathering. Master Aohilles (Bell), Suratura (Eeed), Pcronilla, and Negative were the runners in the opening event, and they wero fancied in that order. The top woight, Peronilla, was the quickest to begin, while Suratura lost a little ground. Peronilla was still in command at the distance, but Master Achilles had the situation well in hand, and at the judge's box he was half a length in front oi Peronilla. Suratura was third. Waitomo was withdrawn from the Tawaha Hack Haildicap, seven furjongs, and the top weight, Submersion, was made a good favourite. The latter got off badly, and Tangihau, who carried 9lb. overweight to secure W. Bell's services, led down the back. Across the bottom stretch Submersion had taken charge from Tangihau, but the effort was too much and the chestnut gelding came again ,in the straight, and wore down the favourite. Te Opai was a fair third, and Borsil was next.
Of the four acceptors in the big handicap Square Deal carried .most support. Chillies and Ladify made the'pace to the home turn, where Square - Deal came along, and after settling the leaders he came on' alone.' Chillies finished well in 6econd place, just dear of Peroneal. W. Bell had his fourth consecutive victory in the Hack Welter Handicap, when Prince Laddo defeated Arlington, who carried slightly less support than the favourite. Soporific was also well supported. Arlington got a useful break at the barrier, and led the favourite till well down the straight, when the latter wore him down and won by a couple i lengths. The big chestnut gelding again acted badly on the turns, and this probably cost him the race. • Botanist was withdrawn from the Ju-' venile Handicap, leaving eight starters. Happiness, the full-sister to 'Chakwana was the hottest order of the meeting. After one false start the field, with tho exception of, Taringamutu, who 'was again left, moved off to a fair start. Daneen a M Ladylike.led for the first half mile with the favourite hand V.. The lastnamed assumed command m the straight and never left v the issue in doubt, winning very easily. Thoughtful, who got second place, gave the biggest return oi the meeting. The win of the favourite was the easiest of the meeting. -There WOTe nine starters in■ the Buamahunga Hack Handicap. : W. Young, who had the mount on Orleans on the opening day, gave place to W. Bell today, and Young rode Lady Vladimir. The top weight was a good favourite, but he failed to jump out cleanly at the 6tart, and then.had to go round the field. Am-ber'and-White and Lady Vladimir led at the start, followed by Merrie Gain. The last-mentioned and Need were conspicuous across the bottom, but the Penury filly failed to sustain her run. Merrie Gain took charge just after the, turn was negotiated, and Orleans came fasten the outside. The latter failed to get up and Merrie Gain won by a bare length from- Amber and White. • The favourite was unluoky not to score. : >~ ' The public were evenly divided as to the merits of Blue Lake and Chakwana in the Eawiri Handicap, and at tho close of the machine the pair wero evenly supported. The result of the race proved how well the situation had been gauged, for the pair finished in • a line, and the judge gave it a dead-heat. Blue Lake was the quickest to begin, ■ and had a break .of four or five lengths racing round the. bend. Chakwana then put in a great run, and actually headed Blue Lake fifty yards off the poßt, but she died away, and : Blue Lake getting in tho last stride got up and made a dead-heat of it. Poronilla was third and Inirner finished well back.
, ; The; biggest'field of the meeting went out for tho Pirinoa ' Hack Scurry, some 19 horses facing the barrier. Miss Trumps and Rerehau'were the best fancied, and the former won after a good race. Altitude was in second place, and Ally, who finished very fast, got third place. The details of the racing are:—
