The weather on Saturday was ideal at Petone, and the foreshore was crowded with young and old, of both sexes, the bathing sheds proving totally' inadequate to accommodate bathers. 1 Sun bathing has now become a fashionable heboy, end in the young generation a slightly dusky complexion is appearing. The employees of Messrs. Oppenheimer and Go. held their annual picnic at the Hutt Park on New Year's Day. There was a good attendance, and the outing proved "ery successful. ... The committee desires to thank Mrs. Eichlebaum and Messrs. Oppenheimer and Co., and Mr. Hublitz for trophies, etc., and also the caretaker of the'park (Mr. C. Latham)'for courteous attention. The re-suite of the adult races were;— Married men's race (Mr. S. Eichlebaum's trophy)—J. Wright, 1; W. Martin 2. Married women's race (Mrs. Eichlebaum's trophy); Mrs. J. Wright, 1; Mrs. A'rrowsmith, 2. Open race: W. Martin, 1; G. Tancred, 2. Visitors' race: W. Edlin, 1; W. Gough 2. Before leaving for home each child was presented with a toy. At the Petone Church of Christ Sunday School yesterday an "open day" was held. Mr. H.. Witbington (superintendent) presided, and after prayers for the nation had' been offered, and Psalm 25-.read, an address on "Obedience, and Courage" was delivered by Mr. A ; B. •Wright, in which the speaker claimed that by the'exercise of these characteristics only, Britain and the Allies would conquer their enemies, so boys and girls in Christian . warfare would, if they used the same qualities, conquer their worst enemy, sin.
