DELUDED GERMANS
VIEWS OF PRISONERS (Rec. January 3, 3.20 p.m.) London, January 2. "Eye-witness," with Headquarters, says that _ fighting is proceeding on ground which both, sides have been excavating in all directions for weeks, nintO it has become a perfect labyrinth of crossings and recrossings. Some prisoners take a gloomy view of the situation. Thoj* are conscious that the war will last much longer than was first but as it has been waged entirely in the enemy's country they do not realise they are fighting ; what riiust eventually be a losing'cause. They believe that Russia hag suffered a decisive defeat, that Franco is exhausted and ready to make peace, and that the English are a decadent people engrossed in football. The Germans have not felt as yet' the pinch-of want or lack of men and materials.. The_newspapers are doing their best to inspire a fanatical hatred of tho British. . '
