N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS

FIRST DAY'S PLAY HOW WELLINGTON PLAYERS ... FARED. . ■ (By TeleKaph.—Press Association.) Dunedin, December 30. The 29th. annual championships of tho Now Zealand Lawn Tennis Association w r ere commenced here to-day in beautiful weather. The entries are not 60 largo as in former years, a fact that 1 is doubtless attributable to the disturbed state of tho country as .a result of Che war,.but the quality of the players amply compensates for the lack of entries. ' There was •■i'""gbod attendance of. the public, and all the, present champions were" competing with the" exception of Miss Steel; who holds tho Combined Championship with M. Ollivier, of Okristchurch. ' An excellent playing surface in the absence of established grass courts in this city had been prepared at Carisbrookc, and all the courts proved to be extremely fast and true. Play throughout the day.was of a high standard, and as no fewer than' eighteen matches were completed before five o'clock the tournament was well advanced. The Men's Doubles/ in particular, provided some splendid contests, • but the majority of the other matches were won somewhat easily. Wallace; the present Singles champion, was in splendid form, as was also his Doubles partner Dickie. Ollivior-and' Jennings were playing remarkably well, _ and the remaining rounds should provide some excellent play.-' ,' - - ' Folio wing -are the results :-r-. .'
