CANADA OAPE PURCHASED BT UNION , COMPANY. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Dunodln, Decembor 29. The steamer Canada Cape, at present engaged in the trans-Pacific service, has been purchased by the Union Company, to which she has been under charter for some time. The' Canada Cape has been specially chartered by the Union Company for about two years, and during that time sho has been engaged in various trades for the company, but principally in tho Pacific Slope—New Xcfl land-Australian running. Her first appearance at Wellington was 6hartly after tho charter had been arranged, and on that occasion she brought a. general cargo down from San Francisco. She is now at Fiji, loading up with sugar for Van:ojver. During a gale on Christmas t&re the Canada Oaue woaV.flflJioro to Suva
Harbour, but wos subsequently refloated undamaged. She is a Bteel screw steamer of 4283 tons gross register, built in 1904 for Messrs. H. and 0. Grayson, Ltd.,' Liverpool. lONIO EEPOBTED. A cablegram has been received by the hood office of tho Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company, stating that fi.M.B. lonic, which cleared Wellington for London on December 4, arrived at Monte Yideo on. The "London Shipping Gazette" states that tho Cunard liner Campania has been sold out of the company's service, and has been acquired by British buyers. The transaction brings to a close a noteworthy ocean career. Along with" tho Lucanta, . which was deetroy-ed some time back by lire in dock, the Campania did much to en- . hunco tho prestige of the British flag on the 'North Atlantic. These, vessels Eet up , new records, arid did tho pasago in little more than five dayfl. i It has, of course, been' the fate of the Campania to bo outclassed by larger and i Bwifter ships, but - the Ounard Company have good, reason to look back upon the . history of tho Campania and the Lucania ivith as /much satisfaction as they can re- , gard tho earlier achievements of the Umbria and tho Etruria. It wee thought at one time that the ship might bo permanently transferred either to . tho Anchor Lino service from the Clyde or to the Ounard service to Canada. Sho was, , however, built for a first-class passenger trade, and for either of the trade® mon- , tioned she would necessarily have had to undergone oompleto alteration in her accommodation before she.would he suited for a service in which the "one cabin" boat is the most popular and most profitable. Tho Oampanla was built on the Clyde in 1893. She has triple-expansion engines of 3191 n.h.p., and her average speed is about 22 knots. • . SALE OF GEBMAN VESSELS.. The sale of two German vessels to en English Arm in anticipation of tho declaration, of war. between Germany and England was not a bona-fide transaction,, and such vessels subsequently captured or seized are subject to the saino treatment as accorded • other German vessels taken by England as prizes of war. The above is in substance the judgment of Sir Eamuel Evans, president . of the ■ London Prize Court, in tho cases of the Tom'mi and the iiothersand, both sailing. vessels, detained as prizis of war by the Collectors of Customs at- Gravcsend and Kilcady. When the caeos were heard by tho Prize Court a claim was made by the Sugar Fodder Co., Ltd., to the Ownership of two vessels. The sliipo belonged to. a German company, the Korddeutsche- Krnftfutter Gesellsehaft. Some time in July tho ships loft the ports of Germany, and on August I were both on the high seas. It was claimed that the shins were sold bona fido, and that a sufficient transfer took placo from the original owners to the alleged new owners, the Sugar Fodder Co.-, while .the ships were in transit. This view was not taken by the Court-. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Mr, F. Kendall* who has been acting as extra officer on tho Jiiapourika, left that vessel yesterday.. Mr. D. Bcid, mate of tho Opawa, has come ashore, and, his place has been filled by Mr. R. Manson. 1 ~ Captain J. D. 8. Phillips, commander of tho K.M.S.
