, VIGOROUSLY WORDED : TREATMENT OF AMERICAN CO3MRCE (Reo. December 29, 9.5 p.m.) . ™ IT Washington, December 28. The United States has addressed a strong remonstrance to Britain against the treatment of American commerce by the British fleet. The Note, dispatched to Sir Edward Grey (Foreign Secretary) ■asserts that much hostile feeling has been generated' in the United States owing to the activities against American cargoes.'. j _ While the representations made aro in a friendly spirit, it is pointed out that public opinion holds Britain responsible for the present depression of American industries. The reimbursement tor seized cargoes is declared to be noremedy for the grievances. The chief difficulty is the moral effect od' American exporters,-who are restrained from taking risks which otherwise they would in trading with neutral countries. A tun .statement of the British attitude is asked for m order to take steps, to protect American citizens engaged in legitimate trade., ' . , ' Tho Noto is vigorously worded, and is declared to be the strongest addressed to any belligerent sinco. the outbreak or tne war. , LORD SALISBURY'S VIEWS.
