PAHIATUA NOTES.

The principal shopkeepers in Pahiatua have decided to close their business premises on Saturday, January 2, thus giving the assistants an opportunity of having a good holiday for the New Year vacation. Captain 0. E. Clifton, who has joined the Expeditionary Reinforcements Camp at Trentham, was given an edthu3iastio send-off in Pahiatua last week-end. Speeches'were made by the Mayor ' iMr. J. D. 0. Crewe) and Mr. W. Tosswill. The Pahiatua Brass Band played patriotic selections in the Flagstaff Square and at the railway station. Captain Clifton, who was a very popular man in this district, took a keen interest in civic affairs. He was a member of the Pahiatua Borough Council. lie also took a prominent part in the forming of the Pahiatua Defence Eifle Club. Although Christmas Day was wet and cold, the remainder of the holidays vere fine. The opening of tho People's Park on Boxing Day proved a great succpes. Mr. J. H. Escott, M.P., who officially opened the] Park, paid a high tribute to tho energy displayed by Mr. E. tiaucke, who initiated the Bcheme for procuring what is considered to'be one of the finest pieces of native bush ■. in New Zealand. The original owner of the land, Mr. John Hall, sonior, now of Levin, was present at the function, and was accorded. three hearty cheers . for his' foresight in, preserving the bush. Cheers were also given for Messrs. Escott and Baucke. -The official result .of the (dairy cow competition, conducted by the Pahiatua A. and P. Association, is as follows :— Mr. L. Polglaso's (Makuri), Lady Disdain, 60Jlb. milk, 4.7 test, 2.8431b. butler-fat, first. ■ Mrs. H. Cowan's Lily, 66Jlb. milk, 4.2 test, 2.7821b. butter-fat, second. Mr. A. Barrell's cow, 421b. milk, 5.2 test, 2.18471). butter-fat, third... Ten cows were entered for the competition, and the record between the first and second placed animals was very close, there being a difference of only about an ounce or butter-fat.
