The death occurred at Carterton ek, Saturday morning, says our correspondent, of Dr. Thomas J. Gallin, who was : some five months ago appointed surgeon to the Oarterton Friendly Societies. Some three weeks ago Dr.'.Gal' Hα was taken seriously ill. from whichj illuess little hopes were neld for hil recovery. The deceased, who was 84' years of age, was formerly a master builder, and a large number of the older residences in Wadestown were erected by him. Hβ leaves two sons, Messrs. ', Dr. Alex Murray Drennan, who haei been appointed to the chair of clinical-' pathology, in the University of Otago,. is 30 years of age, and married. The positions lie now resigns are: First as--•sistant to the professor of pathology in the University of Edinburgh, lectureron practical pathology in the same uni-' , versity, assistant, pathologist ■to the - Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, pathologist ■. to Chalmers Hospital, and demonstrator in practical histology in the post-j graduate courses. "In-his undergradu-; ate course he gained the Vane Dunlopi scholarship. He passed all hie profes- ! sional examinations with' distinction,and took the degrees of • M.B. and! Ch.B.. in 1906 with first-class honours.The only other member of that year' who oould claim a similar record was Dr. Champtaloup, now professor of bacteriology and public health in the University of OtaßoV At graduation he • was awarded the Bfctles Scholarship. Mr. George Harris, a well known Ohristehurch solicitor, died'at Jiis residence, at Kolanga, Lower Riccartoa, on Christmas Eve, at tie age of 47; yoars.
