SUCCESSION OF DEFICITS. CRec. December 23. 11 p.m.) Perth, December 23. In the Assombly the Premier made his Budget Statement. The revenue totalled £5,205,343, and the expenditure £5,340,754, the deficit being £135,411. It is estimated that for the cuirrenE year the revenue will amount to £5,207,781, and the expenditure to £5,647,767, and the deficit to £339,895.
NATIONAL PROHIBITION DISCUSSED BY- CONGRESS. (Rec. December 23, 11 p.m.) Washington, December 22. The House of Representatives discussed the question of National Prohi-. uition through Representative Mann proposing that a Prohibition amendment of the constitution bo submitted to the State Conventions specially called Cor the purpose. Representative Vollemer stigmatised the Prohibition movement as a wave of hysteria likely to destroy four billion dollars' worth of property. He said Prohibitionists should denounce George Washington, who was a brewer, Thomas Jefferson, who was a distiller, Abraham Lincoln, who was a bar-keoper, and even Jesus Himself/ who turned water into wine, not grape-juice, which was not likely to have satisfied those wedding guests who were accustomed to something with a stick in it. Grapejuice never added anything to a wedding or a.wake.
Mann's proposal was defeated by 193 to 137. RESOLUTION PAILS. (Rec. December 24, 1.5 a.m.) Washington, December 23. Senator Hobson's resolution favouring National Prohibition finally failed to be carried, the vote being 197 for and 189 against. Although there was aa apparent majority a two-thirds vote of the House is necessary for resolutions to. be 'adopted.
MUTUAL LIFE THE ANNUAL MEETING. (Rec. December 24, 1.5 a.m.) Melbourne, December 28. At the annual meeting of the National Mutual Life Association the chairman stated that the total income amount«d to £1,473,500. The policies issued amounted to • £3,575,800, and payments to policy holders £591,000.
