PORIRUA SCHOOL

; The end of the school year was celebrated by the pupils 'of tho Porirua School on Thursday evening last, when the annual school concert was held in the local hall. Tho building was crowded to its utmost capacity and an excellent'programme consisting of catriotio. spngs, recitations, dances, sketches, oto:;* was presented, ill the items be-, ing rendered by tHe children, who had been .trained by the headmaster, Mr. F. A. Mason, and his assistants, Misses Taylor ■ and- 'Oaverhill: ■ Tie audience wits delighted with the children's efforts and showed its appreciation by hearty applause and frequent encores. In place of the usual prize-giving each pupil was presented with a souvenir card, the prize-money having been unanimously voted by the children to the Belgian Belief Fund.

The various certificates won were also presented by Mr. E. Windley, ohairman of the School Committee.

At the close of the concert a pair of canaries, kindly donated by Mr. E. Barnes tor the purpose was put up to auction, and Mr. P. Mungavin, who acted as auctioneer, was successful in inducing,, vigorous bidding, the result being that the Relief Fund benefited by the sum of £13. Refreshments were then handed to the children, and a dance concluded the evening's amusement.

The following is the school honour roll for the year:—Dux of school: Ada Honore. Tops of classes: Standard VI, Ada Honore: Standard V, Alice Batt; Standard IV, Cecil Harris; Standard 111, Frances Windley; Standard 11, Matos Wi Neera; Standard I, Evelyn Ancell. Special progress: Standard VI,. 'Ethel Torrey; Standard V, Evelyn Whitehouse ; Standard IV, Myra Davis; Standard 111, Amy Harris; Standard 11, Evelyn Pack; Standard I, Jack Curtin. Special mention for exceptional progress: Ethel Torrey, Dorothy Herlihy, Bruce Stronach, Frank Richmond. Special prizes given by a local enthusiast for essay competition were won by Mark Vickers and Daniel Herlihy. Proficiency certificates: Standard VI, Ada Honore, Elsie Ward, Marie Ashworth, Mark Vickers, Jack Lewis, Allen Whitehouse. Competency certificates: Standard VI, Ruby Fisher, Ethel Torrey, Jack : Eastwood, Vivian Holder. Attendance certificates: First class, Allen Whitehouse, Jack Eastwood, Marie Ashworth, Lena Matthews, Lincoln Eastwood, Ralph 'Spiers, Amy Harris, Frances Windley, Kowhai Davies, Elsie Connck, Willie Conrick. Second class: Vivian Holder, Mark Vickers; Harry Davies, Cyril Whitehouse, Len Ward, James Conrick, Frank Richmond.
