ALLIES GAIN GROUND London, December 20. The High Commissioner reports:— "Paris reports that the Allies gained ground on the front at Nieuport and east and south •of Ypres. After desperate artillery combats slight progress was made on the front from the Lys to the Oise. The Allies captured a portion of the trenches on the German first line from Richebourg to La Basse©. "In the region of Lihons two violent German attacks, in an attempt to retake captured trenches, were repulsed. From the Oise to the' Argonne the superiority of the French artillery was manifested."The British lost some trnches taken on Friday at Neuve Chapelle, while the Indians advanced some hundred yards towards Richebourg."
