Leaving Sydney for Wellington. dirce* at noon ou Friday, the Union Company's 6tcamer Moerald had on board 133 ealoon and 103 steerage passengers, as -well as 420 tona of cargo for Wellington. Included in the latter were 576 packages of fruit. Tho Moeraki is duo in port early to-morrow morning, and will Eail for Lyttelton at 5 o'clock in the afternoon. She will return to Wellington on Thursday morning and will bo dispatched, for Sydney direct and Hobart at 5 p.m. the same day—a day earlier than usual. ALIEN CHEWS ON BRITISH SHIPS. "Britain for Britons," which is becoming the motto of many of the trades hitherto dominated by foreigners, i 6 now being taken up by the most important of ait— the mercantile marine. For many years past dismay has boen. caused by the increasing number of foreign sailore engaged on British ships. No doubt the war will in time put a stop to the employment of German and Austrian sailors, but more drastic steps are necessary. An official notico just issued by the Board of Trade is of great importance. This ifl an appeal to the British shipmasters to employ as far as possible only British seamen during the war. MESS TABLE GOSSIP. Mr. Luxford lms joined the Klttawa as second officer,, a report that he had joined the. Expeditionary Forces being incorrect. —"Otago. Daily Times." Mr. F. Naismith has joined the Takapuna as second engineer, and Mr. 0. West as third. Mr. .Tames Harvey, second engineer of the TJlimaroa. is on sick leave at Melbourne. Ml - . J. Barnes, late of the Werribee, Is acting-second engineer of the TJlimaroa. Mr. ~R. D. M'Pherson, late fourth engineer of the TJlimaroa, and Mr. A. Bradley, late fifth engineer of the TJlimaroa, are now second and fourth engineers respectively of the steamer Oberhaußen, which has been taken, over by the Australian Government.
Mr. B. B. Tobin, late of the Corlo, is now fourth engineer of the TJlimaroa, while Mr. M. Tulloch, late of the Wandilla, is now seventh engineer of the TJlimaroa.
Messrs. Bull and M'Ainsh, junior engineers of the TJlimaroa, have been promoted to fifth and sixth engineers respectively. Mr. George Allum, at one time on board the Waliine, was amongst those drowned when H.M.S. Hawke was sunk in the North Sea..
Captain A. _M. Edwin, late of the Monovrai, is now in command of the Maheno, having relieved Captain D. M'Lean, who is in temporary command of the Tofua.
The F. nnd S. liner Buteshire left the Bluff on Saturday for Gisborne, Auckland. Waitara, and Wellington. She will arrive here on January 2, and will clear this port for Avonmouth on January 5.
Having cleared-Liverpool on O"toher 17, via. Ca.pe Town and Hobart, the P. and S. chartered steamer Whakatane should arrive at Auckland to-day and at Wellington about Decembor' 28.
After several days of bad t weather, the conditions at, Greymouth . improved nn Saturday, and several vessels which had been delayed were enabled to resume running.
Advice has been received in Wellington stating thnt the Shaw, Savill steamer Kumara, which left Melbourne on October 23, arrived at London last Friday.
The F. and S. Line's .Morayshiro, which was to have left Liverpool for New caland ports about January 10, has been requisitioned by the Admiralty.
As the New Zealand Shipping Company's BakMo. cleared Wellington for Avonmouth on December 2 sho is due at her destination on January 26.
In continuation of her Journey from New Zealand ports to London, the F. and 8. linor Surroy left Albany on November. 23. She is due at the Home port on January 6.
After an absence of several months, the Maoriland Steamship Company's Lauderdale will make her reappearance at Wellington from Westnort early this week. Her next port of call will be Napier.
At present the Melbourne Company's steamer Melbourne is, taking in timber at Kaipara for Melbourne.
In the course of a short article on shipbuilding the London Shipping journal "Syren," of November 4. 6tates that a new inquiry comes from the New Zealand Shipping Company, which desireß a vessel of a length of 485 ft. On Tynes.ide it is stated that tho Shaw. Savill, and Albion Company has ordered , a vessel of a length of 477 ft. from Sir W. G. Armstrong, Whttworth, and Co.
The steamer Corinna, which arrived at Wellington from Onehunga during the night, has brought 14,000 boxes of butter and 850 orates of cheese for transhipment to the Tongariro for London. The Oorinna will sail for New Plymouth to-morrow for tho purpose of bringing another load of dairy produce to Wellington, for transhipment Home.
An expected arrival at Auckland from New York any time now is the A. and A. Line's chartered' 6team'er Westward Ho. ■After discharging tho northern part of her oargo, the vessel will come on, to Wellington, being' due here about - December 28. From this port tlif Westward Ho will proceed to Sydney and Brisbane. The same company's chartered steamer LoV4 Erne arrived at Lyttelton from New York via Panama Canal yesterday afternoon. She will discharge at southern ports only, subsequently proceeding to Melbourne to complete. Arrangements have been made for the Lord Erne to load at Kockhampton and other.Australian ports on behalf,of the F. and S: Lino for Home.
Tho latest Australian mail brings news tliat the Diesel motor vessel Annam has arrived- at Fremantie from Copenhagen. She is a unique boat, a 6 she is without funnels, and carries no 6tokers of ■ the familiar coal-begrimed style. The chief engineer, who gives effct to his orders from tho navigating bridge, sits at his desk with the case of a director in his oflice. The Annam 16 410 ft. between perpendiculars, with a breadth of 55ft. and 38ft. 6in. deep.
For the purpose of being plaoed on the Wellington Patent Slip for overhaul and survey, the Anchor Line's steamer Kaitoa is due in port from Nelson on Wednesday of this week.
Stores for East Cape lighthouse were landed at East Cape from the Hinemoa on Saturday, and the vesel proceeded on to Cuvier Island and The Watchman lights.
From Melbourne and Hobart the Hnd-dart-Parker steamer Wimmera arrived in the stream at Wellington shortly after 10 p.m. yesterday. Pratique will be granted this morning, after which the vessel will berth at the Queen's Wharf No. 6. The Wimmera is scheduled to leave Wellington for southern ports, Hobart, and Melbourne at 5 p.m. to-day.
The Government steamer Tutanekai left Wellington for Lyttelton on' Saturday afternoon for the purpose of conveying Government House staff to the southern port.
At 1.5 p.m. on Saturday the coastal steamer Awahou left Wellington- for East Coast hays to pick up a load of wool.
