NOTES AND COMMENTS
[Br GLEncob.l Next Saturday (Boxing Day) there will be racing all over the Dominion. The Auckland Cup meeting is, of course, the most important fixture, but the Manawatu and Taratahi fixtures will attract the most local interest. Special fast trains have been arranged for Dotn meetings. Acceptances for the first day's events at the Stratford Racing Club's meeting close to-night with the club s secretary, Mr. A. Coleman. Entries for the Borough Stakes, Farmers' Plate, and Cardiff Stakes are due at the same time. Owners are reminded, that acceptances for the first day's events at the Wairarapa Racing Club's ■ summer, meeting close on Wednesday evening with the club's secretary, Mr. E. A. Laery, Featherstori.- - _
JDn Saturday morning, at Riccarton, the Manawatu. Cup candidate Quarantine, with a light-weight up, was given a solid nine furlongs. He was picked up by Merry Trick after going part of the way, and the pair finished together. The black horse went particularly well, and will leave for Palmerston North tonight. The two-year-old Merry Dale (DownBliire—Happy Valley) lias contracted a cold, and will not be Been out at tho holiday fixtures. At the conclusion of the Woodville meeting the Porirua horses , were railed to Awapuni, and will remain there to race at the Manawatu fixture.
Multiplication having won a Tace at Woodville, is not eligible to start in the Trial at Awapuni on Boxing Day. During the Woodville meeting _it was reported that all was not well with the Auckland Cup favourite Reputation, but "is the Martian colt has mad© the final payment for the big event it can be taken for granted that there is little amiss with him.
The Hymettus—Chantreps filly purohased by Mr. Henry Gaisford at the the Dannevirke sportsman has proved untrainable, and is to go to the stud. So far none of the horses purchased by the Dannevirke sportsman has proved equal to winning.
Tho local owner, Mr. D. Sullivan, has purohased a business in Auckland, and will leave for the north immediately. His .brood mare Penza (Finland —La Gloria) is in the private sale list.
Belasco, who will be the sole Porirua representative at the Ellerslie meeting, was railed north last evening. He will bo riddon by C. Emerson in his engagements.
After his win in the High Weight Handicap at Woodville there were many who classed Square Deal as the equal of his full-brother Postillion. The bay horse is certainly every bit as good looking as Postillion, but he has yet to equal the deeds of the black horse. .
Reputation is still a firm favourite for the Auckland Cup. Admitting that the oolt is in the first-class, it must bo said that he is taking on tho most difficult contract he has yet been called on for, and with 61b. 'above weight for ago he has none tho best of the handicap. Added to this,"he is only a littlo follow, and a couple of bumps will assuredly beat him at the end of such a long journey. On the other hand, he is a very gritty colt, and favoured by a good run throughout the race he may bo prominent. FIXTURES. Dec. 2S—Taratahi-Carterton B.C. Annual. Dec. 28 and 28—Dunedin J.C. Summer.
