CIVIC AFFAIRS

. MEETING OF. THE COUNCIL. . .The City Counoil met on Thursday. The Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) presided, und there were present also Councillors R. Fletcher, J. E. Fitzgerald, A. H. Hindmarsh, T. C. A. Hislop, It. A. Wright, M. F. Luokie, E. iVogear, J. Fuller, L. M'Kenzie, W J. Thompson, A. R. Atkinson, H. Buddie, J. Godber, G. Frost, and W. H. P. Barber. Sewerage extension to Onepu Road, estimated to cost £114 10s., was authorised, as recommended by the City ■ Engineer. It was resolved: "That in future no new taxi-cab license should be granted unless the vehicle complies with the City Engineer's specification." This recommendation is made by the motor inspeotor, in order to have a commencement made to have a uniform type of taxi-cabs plying for hire, fitted with a taximeter. The council authorised the commencement of the construction of the following streets in the ordor named: —Charlotte Avenue, Bruce Avenue, and Reuben Avenue. The owners of property who lave not paid their contribution of the cost of formation are to be informed that their money will require to be' paid within fourteen days from the commencement of the work in their avenue. . It was reported that the City Engineer had completed negotiations for the purchase of a small strip of land 7 feet wide at Mount Pleasant for widening the road, for the sum of £30. The council is to shift the fence and pay the legal costs of the same.

The Outlying Districts Committee reported that they had been waited upon by a deputation representing the Vogeltown and Moruington Municipal ETcotors' Association in connection with the proposal suggested by the City Engineer for a new road connection of easy grade from Brooklyn to Vogeltown. In view of the short time available for the, residents, to inspect the proposal, the committee agreed to hold over the question until next month, when they will" meet the residents on the ground. The tender of Mr. H. Brice was accepted for the lease of premises, Brandon Street for a term of four years, at a rental of £156 per annum. A monthly tenancy of 12 sections of Lambton Reclaimed Land was granted Messrs. M'Leod, W.eir, and Hopkirk, at a rental of £100 per month. _ ' The consent of the council was granted respecting the transfer of two sections of Mangahao Endowment from Manson and Charles Lett. It was reported that the acceptance of Messrs. French and Hampton's tender for the erection of a bathing shed at Day's Bay beach, in the sum of £231, had been accepted.
