MAGISTRATE'S COURT
A SERIES OF BURGLARIES ALLECED OFFENDER IN COURT. Ah was expected, the man George Slavisch, who was caught by. Constable Tricklebank on Wednesday attempting to enter the house of Mr. Grabham, in Tinakori Koad, and who appeared before fjie Magistrate on Thursday, again appeared yesterday charged with a series of burglaries in the vicinity. The charges are as follow:—(1) On December 11, entering the dwelling-house of Mary Lukin and stealing a silver clock valued at £2, the. property of Gresley Lukin; (2) entering the dwelling of Dr. Garnet W. Harty and stealing property to tho value of £8; (3) entering the dwelling of Emily Francis Hogbon and stealing a jar of preserved fruit and two Christmas puddings; (4) entering tho dwelling of Bryan Staplyton Breo and stealing an overcoat valued at £2 155.; (5) entering the dwelling of Thomas Young and stealing 31b. of meat and 61b. of apples and an overcoat, and kodak valued at £7. Chief-Detective Broborg said that since accused had been before tho Court the previous morning the above charges had been laid against him, and thero would probably bo another. A remand was asked for to next Tuesday, when all the cages could be heard on the same day. A GAMS OP "HAZARDS." A wharf labourer named \Villiam Garnham appeared before tho Court in the aftornoon, having, been just arrested on tho Glasgow Wharf for playing "hazards." Hfe was primarily charged with being a rogue and a vagabond in that he had been discovered playing a Edmo of ohtmoo, to wit Mr, p, .jy. Jackson., who gnpaaredj
for accused, remarked that the chargo was rather harsh, and that it mi. bb reduced to one of playing an unlawful game.- Accused would not deny this. Inspector Hendrey said ho had no objection to this, as the case was not a bad one. Accused had been found with several others playing a. game with dice known' as "hazards." Although the case had not the bad features of similar ones, the officials on the waterfront complained of this game being played by largo numbers on the wharf. The Magistrate agreed to reduce the charge, and on accused pleading guilty a fine of £4 was imposed. ALLEGED ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. Robert Curtice was remanded to December 28 on' charges of attempting to commit suicide, and (2) that on November 10 he threatened to shoot Mary Ann Thew, who, being afraid he will do her harm, prayed for sureties of "the peace. The_ remand was granted, as Curtice is in the Hospital suffering from a bullet wound. OTHER CASES. Allan George Smith was remanded to Tuesday next on a charge of receiving a gold watch and chain, valued at £25 10s., the property of Edward Hurcomhe, knowing the same had been .dishonestly obtained Accused, who was represented by Mr. P. J. O'Regan. was remanded to Tuesday next. Bail was allowed in £50, with sureties. ■ "A young man, named Arthur Leonard Aussel, appeared on remand to answer two charges of indecent assault. He was defended by Mr. P. W. Jackson. After the hearing of the evidence,' •accused entered a plea of not guilty, and was committed to the , Supreme :Court for trial. The defence was re:served. Bail was renewed. • William Cunningham was charged with unlawfully assaulting Septimus Ross. It was explained that acoused was worried as his wife was in the Hos,pital,_ and as a result he had been drinking heavily. Accused was ordered ;te pay £1 Is. medical expenses and witnesses' expenses Bs., in default to .undergo three days' imprisonment. . Charges of being a rogue and a vaga.bond were preferred- against William • Davis and Norman Christopher, each of whom was found the previous night unlawfully on premises. The first acoused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon, and • the latter was sentenced to one imprisonment. , For insobriety, James Gallagher was fined £2 or seven days' imprisonment. Three first offenders were dealt with. ; BY-LAW BREACHES."
' Maurioe Haslen was fined 5a., with costs 76., for allowing a bull to wander in Severn Street. On a similar charge, ; ho was convicted nnd discharged., ■ Fines of os., with .costs 75., were imposed on the following for the by-law breaches mentioned:—John B. Fitzgerald and Jamee Frockter, leaving a motor-oar in the public street after dark without a tail light; Albert Cam.eron, Lewis Se'gel, Victor Smith, Guy L. Fulton, and Thomas Gollins, driving a motor-car after dark without a tall : light; Hans Scott, leaving a motor-car iii Hunter Street without anyone in charge; Donald Naughton, Francis E. M'Parland, and Sam Bray, allowing 6tock to wander, CIVIL CASES. . A civil case set down for hearing in •the Magistrate's Court yesterday waß one in which F. IL Labatt. of the New Zealand Sheepfarmeis' Agencv, proceeded against C, V. Coulter for £32 10s. for commission on the sale of a property. Mr. T. Neave, who appeared for defendant, asked for an adjournment, as he had just been instructed to appear for defendant. Mr. D. M. Findlay, for
plaintiff, agreed on condition that costs were allowed. After some argument the Magistrate adjourned the case to January 19, costs £1 95.-Icing alowcd plaintiff's solicitor. The hearing of the civil case William Brannigan v. Ethel Emily Howoll, a claim for £51 18s. 6d., and interest for moneys alleged to bo paid on behalf of defendant, was opened before Mr. W. G. Riddeil. Decision was reserved.
