"Come on. If you don't come quietly, I'll make you come somehow." ; "Oh, I'll come. I don't want a eoene. But there's nothing against me." "We'll see." "What's tbo charge, then?" "No-charge. Come along with me." "Very well. I said I'd come." "Will you come quietly down to —- stables?'* "Yes." On the way to the stables the little dark man learned that he was arrested on a charge of being a German spy. . When he reached the abode of horses' and hansoms he was "identified." "Is this the man?" said the Scotland Yarder. - "That's him," came the reply with promptitude and assurance of one who did not .make mistakes, and was in this instance, positive. ■' ''Sure?" continued the constable. : "Absolutely.". . _ Here the suspect protested innocence 'of'espionage!"': ' "Aren't you the man," asked the identification person imperiously, "who was' telling me all about what you wore going to do when tne time came?" ; : The little man denied that he was the individual alluded to. Producing his left. hand from one pocket, the identification man thumped it frequently with his right - hand, remarking to the accompaniment of the beats: "''Aren'tr—you—the m an—who told 'me—that- you—could commandeer —all the horses in ■ Wellington—when the Germans attacked New Zealand—' and place them—at -the disposii of the enemy?" • .' . "No, certainly not," retorted the man under suspicion. "Aren't—you—the man—who told me —that your organisation^-could > put its hands—on; all the motor-cars in Wellington—when it wanted them for the enemy?"

"No," again. "You are," shouted the interrogator, indignantly. And he-waved a heicy fist in the vicinity of the little man's nose. "Oh. don't take it so bad as that," said the arrested one coolly. _ The policeman thanked the identifier for having confirmed his suspicions, and he marched his quarry, off to the station. . There was no trouble en route. The little-man. respected the law, and obeyed.his shfowd and powerful captor. 'GoodKlay, Mr. O'So-and-so," said the sergeant as the suspect walked in: The constable started a little,.but recovered his self-possession and laid his charge with Holmos-like oxpertness.
