LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION
SUSPENDED. Melbourne, December 18. During the debate on the Commonwealth Bank Bill, an uproar occurred in tho Federal House of Representatives.
The Speaker named Mr. Cook (Leader of the Opposition) and the whole of tho Opposition left tho Chamber. ■ Mr. Cook will remain suspended, until he apologises. In* tho absence of the Opposition the Bill was rushed through. Tho Senate passed Bills authorising the issue of Treasury bills sanctioning an eighteen million loan and. the raising and expending of two millions on tho construction of a railway from Kalgoorlie to Port Augusta.
MR. COOK APOLOGISES. (Rec. December 18, 11.45 p.m.) Melbourne, December 18. Mr. Cook has apologised, and resumed his seat.
• A SURGICAL MIRACLE RECOVERY OF A MANGLED MINER. Sydney, December 18. The High Court awarded Alfred Hnddy, miner, £1900 —record damages —for injuries received by him through a fall of stone while he was employed by the Hampdon-Cloncurry Mining Company, Huddy sustained a. fractured skull, both his jaws were broken, three ribs cracked, and his left leg shattered. His right arm was also mangled and had to he amputated. Huddy's recovery is regarded as a surgery miracle. LOAN OF WHEAT MR. MASSEY APPEALS TO AUSTRALIA. • Sydney, December 18. The Hon. D. R. Hall (Minister of Justice), commenting on the wheat position, stated: "I am considering a cablegram from the Prime Minister of New Zealand asking for a loan of wheat until he imports from Canada or the Argentine. lam not averse to the proposal." N.S.W. IRON TRADE EFFORT TO PREVENT DISLOCATION. ' Sydney, December 18. Tho Labour Council has appointed a deputation to visit Mr. Esfcell to urge him to take action-to prevent a disloca. tion of the iron trade owing to Judge Heydon's recent judgment against making increases in wages during the | war. TOTALISATOR BILL 'A NON-PARTY MEASURE. Sydney, December 18. It is stated that Mr. A. H. Griffith (Minister of Works) proposes to introduce a Totalisator Bill, which will be a non-party one. RISE IN TOBACCO 'A PENNY ADDED TO RETAIL PRICES. Sydney, December 18. The Tobacconists' Association has decided to add a penny per ounce on imported tobacco and' a penny per packet on imported .cigarettes, to cover tho new tariff. BROWING POEMS A NEW VOLUME JUST ISSUED. (Rec. December 18, 5.45 p.m.) London, December 17. A' new Browning volume, .covering twenty-nine poems by Robert Browning and six by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, has'been published by Smith, Elders. The poems are delightfully characteristic, several being pleasant private missives, written in early years.—"Times" and Sydney "Sun" Services.

December 19, 0.35' a.m.) Melbourne, December 18. The- Federal session lias ended, and .been adjourned until April 14, unless exceptional circumstances necessitate a special call in the meantime.
