DUTY ON FILMS

SHOWMEN EXPLOITED. By 'JMeerapk—Press Association-Copyrisht (Rec. December 18, 9.40 p.m.)' Sydney, December 18. A deputation of picture showmen asked the Attorney-General to recognise tho film as a necessary commodity, and alleged that the film combinewas passing the 50 per cent. Increase in the film duty (which was really meant as a protective measure for the local industry) on showmen in regard to millions of feet of films on whioh no extra duty had been paid. .This meant that the combine was reaping an increase of two to three hundred per cent., and would mean closing the shows and throwing out five hundred musicians. Tho Attorney-General replied that ho was preparing a Bill to deal with combines, including pictures, and advised that the matter bo submitted to the Commodities Commission, on whose reconiondation ho would act.
