TERRIFIC ONSLAUGHT REPULSED
: GENERAL ADVANCE BY THE ' allies;:. ;: FRENCH : IARQ*M M RHINE \. ITALY AND ; THE WAR ' : 'After a comparative oalm on ihe battle-front in Weßt Flanders, the ;■ 'lillies have resumed the offensive. A general advance haß, beeh initiated with three days' fierce fighting along the Ypres-Roulers line... The battle is described as having been the fiercest which has yet teen fought in that region, there being no fewer than 24,000 casualties on ; a battle-front of a, few miles; He result of the operations has been that a strong wedge has been, driven into the German line, and the way to Eoulers is now open. There is comparatively little news \ from North France, but- on the Eastern front the French line is pur- • string a successful advance in Alsace towards-the Rhine, the way to . which is being rapidly opened up.. It is even stated that the great German stronghold' at,Strasburg can be invested at will. From the Poland theatre there is an amusing conflict of assertion in the officialreports from Petrograd and Vienna,. the latter of which, of course, must be treated -with suspicion. That the Russian operations against the German offensive from Mlawa : have"been successful is admitted in - - Berlin, while the Austrian authorities are constrained to admit, also the recent reverses in Servia. The Russians' are now ! developing their movement towards the Carpathian passes, and heavy fighting, , with varying results, is proceeding in Central Poland between Lowicz and the Bziira River. In the Near East great military activity is reported from Damascus, where heavy" concentration of troops is proceeding. A vigorous onti-war 'demonstration' by Turkish women in Erzerum indicates that the war is' far from popular. Italy is determined to exact full reparation from Turkey for the outrage on her Consulate-at Hodeida, and'the Italian Senate has clothed the Cabinet with complete political and financial power'to deal with the foreign situation, a decision which is interpreted by the "Daily Telegraphy correspondent at Rome as authorising a. policy of intervention.
