A. LETTER FROM THE RECRUITING .■ OFFICER.'/ . A special meeting of the council of the Wellington Chamber-of Commerce was held yesterday to consider tho following letter, which .had been forwarded to tho Chamber by Major R. 'L. Levin, of Feilding:— "A report'is circulating to the. effect that some business nouses in: the Wellington district /are retardfug recruiting by refusing to, keep positions open to those in their employ who may be desirous of joining the Expeditionary Forces, and who may wish to enter the employ of such firms at the conclusion of the war. ■', I hardly imagine that any persons can be so unpatriotic, but in my capacity as a recruiting officer I should like to bo .in a position to emphatically deny this rumour. I : would be • glad if you would ask the Wellington Chamber of Commerce to in- ' vestigate this matter, and-, to write . ' to me officially .on the subject at the earliest possible date." The meeting was presided over by Mr. James Macintosh (acting-chairman), and tlicro were present: Mossrs. W. G. Duthie. Geo. Shirtcliffe) W. G: Foster, W. Bridson, T. Ballingor, and J. G.' Harkness. The'letter in question was considered in committee, and at' the. conclusion of' the meeting it was ■■re,-' rjqrted. that tho following Resolution, to be embodied in a letter from ; the chairman, had been passed:— "That the council has every, reason to believe that_ employers have granted every facility to member's of their staffs to join, the Expedi- ', ' tionary Forces, and that, they will, continue to do so consistent with.a ! sufficient, staff being retained for the carrying on of the business of the country. The members of the council know of no instances where positions have hot been kept open , for such employees." ''•'.'•.•
