CITY CRICKET
HUGE SCORE BY CENTRAL
TWO MORE CENTURIES
Saturday's cricket resulted in another hugo score at the Basin Eeserve. This season seems likely to become famous in the cricket history of. Wellington for the exceptionally heavy scoring of the batsmen. Three factors aro working towards _ making this a batsmen's year: there is a general improvement in bat-' ting in somo teams the bowling is weaker than usual, and the wickets are better.
Central's big performance stood. at 527 runs for nine wickets when stumps wore 'drawn. The total included several good individual efforts, two of which produced centuries. Burton, who punished the bowling with the' greatest freedom, ran up 176 beforo he quitted the crease, and M'Cardell is not out with 141. to. bis credit. Dind 6cored 51. These three batsmen are always likely to make runs, and Saturday gave them their chance, as the bowling was weak. Old Boys' attack lacked both quality and variety. M'Cardell and Burton were partnered for some time, and the pair made the pace very merry. . It was particularly pleasing to see M'Cardell doing well, as last year le rather failed to reproduce in public the form displayed in his "track work." Dind, who is batting consistently this season, played last year in the Warehousemen's Association. People who follow, Bugby as well as cricket were interested in.the entry into big cricket ol Arthur Wilson, the New Zealand representative forward. Wilson batted well, and showed an inclination to hit out freely. In a very short stay at the wickets he knocked the bowling about considerably, and added 18 to Centrals' score. If Central continue their innings next Saturday, they may excel the record firstinnings' score (556 runs), made in Wellington championship cricket, which at present stands to the credit of the old Midland Club.
The match between' East and' University was very tamo. University batted first, and were dismissed for 125. East have done little better so far, and at the close of the day they had nine wickets down for 138. Phillips, 'who (with Baker) opened for East, was still at the crease when time arrived. He has contributed 64 to the total, Midlane was absent from the East team, ,but is expected to bat for them next Saturday." CENTRAL AND OLD BOYS, Central.—First Innings. Hiclcson, b. J.
