FOR THE BELGIAN FUND
The promoters of the fete which was held on Maturday afternoon in connection with tho Kosenoath School for the Belgian Relief Fund have every reason to be. satisfied with their, efforts, since it has resulted in a sum of £1(J0 and some odds shillings. Included in this amount is the sum of £'2A which was recoived. for Lady Godley's painting, ai\d also the results of -the, street. collection which was made on Saturday, and which brought in the amount of £21. Tho fete was hold in the school grounds, and the opening ceremony was performed by the Hon. U. J. Johnston, Oonsul-General for Belgium, who' was accompanied by Mrs. Johnston, to whom was. presented, a boiquet of pink and white sweet peas. Mr. Darroch, the headmaster, briefly introduced the Con-sul-General, whp spoke of the brave fight which had been made by the Belgians,; who even- in the very early days of their history had been renowned for bravery. Both ho and Mrs. Johnston then made a tour of the stalls and were afterwards entertained at afternoon tea in one of the class rooms, turned for tho nonce into a tearoom.
On a windy day, Roseneath'has many difficulties to contend against, and to ensure a measure of safety for the stalls a screen of canvas had been erected upon, tie top of the high fence that enclosed the grounds, which certainly broke the forcoof the wind that was raging. There were many visitors, including the members of the School Coniniitteo and ..their wives, anrt of course innumerable school children, who were more or less busy- in assisting the stallholders. Very historical 'wore the qoiitonts of one of the stalls, in charge of a number of boys. . Upon it were a number of medals and brooches, which included in the metal composition of which they were made some of the copper which camei from Nelson's famous ship the Victory. Years ago, all the copper fixings had been melted, and ' some of it was sent to New Zealand 'by the Rot. Mr. Matthewsi secretary of the British- and Foreign Sailors'' Society. Miss Matthews exhibited some in the Christchurch Exhibition some years ago, and Mr. Darroch also has a supply which will be used for patriotic purposes, such as Saturday's fete. Other stalls were in charge of the following ;— Tearoom, Mesdames Low, Hargreayes, Smith, Bird, Misses Harlen and D. Tliirkell; produce, Mrs. Van Borssum, Misses Van Borssum, M. O'Neill, E. Tdlan, E. Hargreaves; sweets, Mesdames Spear, Morrison, Mißses D. Helyer, H. Jones, M. Jones; cakes, Mesdames Ward and Brailsford, Miss Kentr land; flowers, Mrs. Jelly, Misses G. Cashman, Wilkinson; ice cream, Miss Riohardson, Miss Florrio Low; dolls, Misses Winifred Low, K. Bird, Watt, Couchiman; fancy, Misses Marjory and Eileen Adams; fortiino-telling, Miss Davidson; Aunt Sally and shooting gallery. Captain Jelley; bran tub, Misses Bird, F. Corrick, and L. Watt. An interesting'exhibition of physical drill ; was given • under the direction of the teachers. Miss Gawlor was tho fete secretary.
