Emerson. registered an attractive riding performance at Hororata on Saturday. He started off by landing Chorale in second, place in the Farmers' Hack Handicap, after which he won the next three galloping events, scoring ou Christmas Lily in the Bangor Hack Handicap,: Flower o' the West in the Hororata" Cup, and again on Christmas Lily in the Breckendale Handicap. In the following event he was out of a place on Pursoform, and he wound up with a win on Findhorn in the Haldon Handicap. His record for the day was thus four wins and a second out of a programme of six events. Emerson has now won sixteen races for the season, being second on the list to B. Deeley, whose successes so far total twentyseven. A Sydney paper mentions that Mr. 'E. J. Watt .has purchased a portion of the Naa-dillyan Estate, and.' (intends starting a stud there.' The death of the oelebrated crosscountry horse Jerry M. is reported from, England. Jerry M., who was bred in Ireland 11 years ago, was second in one Liverpool Grand/ National Steeplechase and first in another., When he ivon in 1912 he carried 12st. 71b., and beat 23. others. Fred Winter, the Kaiser's first jockey, was among those unfortunate British subjects in Germany who were put in prison when the war broke out. At latest advice he was still a prisoner. The "Racing.Calendar" of Ootober 22 announces that the stewards of the Jockey Club have withdrawn the notice, Eublished on Ootober 3., 1901, warning ester Reiff off Newmarket_ Heath. Lester Reiff was one of the jockeys from the "States" who went to England at the" period of what has come to be known as the "American invasion," and for five years 'from the beginning of 1896 ocoupied a prominent position among the professional riders. He had a large number of mounts during hiß time, and at the end of 1900 headed the list of • winning - jockeys with. 143 successes. Though ho did not ride the winners of many important, races, le was on the back of Voiodyovski when that colt won the Derby in 1901.
