THE EAST SEAT SPLENDID RECEPTION FOR DR. NEWMAN. Dr. A. K. Newman, Reform candidate for! Wellington East, was given a eery "fine reception by the electors when lie spoke in the Clyde Quay School last evening. The meeting 'showed considerable enthusiasm for the candidate, and, with the exception of a few backbencher?, applauded him throughout Jiia eddress, }Ir. F. Gf, Cray presided. Dr, Newman said that he stood in Bupport of the Massey Government (a good pnd capable Administration) as against the Opposition, which was not a, good Government when in office, He impressed on his ftudience tha wisdom of' the Government's land policy, and pointed out that no other government had done so much to divide up the land among the people, and get the back-country roaded, railed, and settled. (Applause.) The keynote of prosperity in this country w settlement, more settlement, and PfaU niore settlement, and the Government wap determined to find land for the landless, (Applause.) The Government had extended the pension system, bpd enacted provision? to make matters easier for married men who might not he very well off, He djd not think the people of ffew Zealand need have any fears for the finance pf the country during the, war. Dr, Newman mentioned that among the good works of the Massey Government Was the reform of the Legislative Goun. pil. (Apijlause.) Tlie country waß almost entirely in favour qjr an elective Upper Houbb, but it took the Reform jParty to put the wishes of the people in this respect on the Statute Book. Applause greeted the candidate when lie:" said that he had favoured admitting women to seats in the House of Representatives. However, apart from the reforms by way of legislation, _ the country always needed sound administration. and that was ensured to them by the Reform Government. If tha people wanted to see an active and a vigorous polioy carried out. they must on Thursday go to the ballot-box and cast their votes in favour of the candidates who would support the present Government.- (Applause.) Tfie Opposition had an old, gtale polioy, and were relying on the suppprt pf the Socialists', who," being the more active, would probably prove to bo the rulers of their co-partners. (Applause.) Pr. Newman was aocorded a very hearty vote of thanks and confidence, which was carried by. an overwhelming majority.
